Why Rain Matters for Olive Groves: What It Means for Your Oil

September rains arrive at the olive groves this year just in time, bringing the long-awaited water our olive trees need to begin the cycle of the next harvest. Did you know that these rains are crucial to keeping the grove healthy and ready to produce the finest Extra Virgin Olive Oil possible?

Autumn rain is one of the most important moments in the life of an olive tree. As nature does its work, the roots draw nourishment, and the soil recovers its vitality. Here's a closer look at why.

How autumn rain shapes the future of the olive grove

Autumn rains play a fundamental role in the olive tree's life cycle. This water doesn't just hydrate the tree after summer — it prepares the ground for the next harvest to come. Let's break down how it affects the grove going forward.

Water recharge and soil revitalisation in the olive grove

After a long, dry summer, the olive trees are parched. Autumn rains arrive at exactly the right moment to replenish the tree's water reserves and allow the roots to hydrate deeply. This is essential for the olive tree to make it through winter and reach spring in full strength.

The moisture also encourages microbiological activity in the soil, helping nutrients reach the roots more effectively. This process not only improves the health of the tree, but ensures the olive has fertile ground on which to grow.

Benefits of water recharge:

  • Maintains the olive tree's vitality through winter.
  • Encourages the development of deep roots.
  • Reactivates soil biology for better nutrition.

Rain and its influence on olive tree flowering

Here's something worth knowing: autumn rains don't just help the olive tree in the present — they also prepare the buds that will flower in spring. Next year's flowering depends, in large part, on how the olive tree enters that season.

With water reserves restored and nutrients in place, buds develop more fully, and this leads to more abundant flowering. The more healthy flowers the olive tree carries in spring, the greater the chance of a rich, high-quality harvest.

A breath of fresh air: active rest

The olive tree, resilient as it is, also needs its time to rest. With the autumn rains, the tree enters a kind of "active rest". It may appear dormant, but its roots keep working — absorbing water and nutrients to prepare for the cycle ahead.

These rains also have a cleansing effect. They wash away the dust built up on the leaves throughout summer, allowing the olive tree to improve its photosynthesis and, in turn, optimise its capacity to absorb nutrients.

Effects of active rest:

  • The olive tree prepares internally for the next season.
  • Clean leaves improve the tree's photosynthetic capacity.
  • Helps prevent prolonged water stress.

A word from Migue, our grower

Talking with Migue, our grower, he shared something his grandfather always used to say: "If it doesn't rain in October, the olive tree stays asleep." It's a poetic way of explaining that, although the olive tree is a robust tree, it needs this water recharge to wake up and stay active.

Without autumn rain, the tree's ability to yield a good harvest drops noticeably. It's not that the olive tree stops producing altogether, but without proper hydration at this key moment, both the quality and quantity of the fruit suffer.

These rains help the olive tree's roots absorb the nutrients needed to grow the fruit that will become the next harvest.

So, while nature is already at work on what will be the next great harvest, I'll leave you with a few delicious recipes to enjoy around a cosy table 😋

Autumn recipes with traditional EVOO

Since rainy days invite us to stay in and enjoy something comforting, I'm sharing a couple of recipes I love for their simplicity and the way they bring out the flavour of the EVOO.

They're perfect for those cool, rainy days when all you want is something to make you feel at home.

Roasted tomato soup with Estirpe EVOO

  • 4 ripe tomatoes
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 onion
  • 50 ml EVOO
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh basil to garnish

Method:
Start by roasting the tomatoes together with the onion and garlic in the oven for around 25 minutes at 200°C. Once roasted, blend them with a splash of intensely flavoured, slightly peppery EVOO — such as traditional Estirpe. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Serve hot with an extra drizzle of oil on top and garnish with fresh basil leaves. This soup is perfect for rainy days and brings out the flavour of the EVOO beautifully.

Warm spinach and almond salad with Estirpe EVOO

  • 100g fresh spinach
  • 50g flaked almonds
  • 50 ml EVOO
  • Crumbled feta or Cabrales cheese
  • Sea salt to taste

Method:
Gently sauté the spinach in a pan with a good Extra Virgin Olive Oil — full of flavour — over a medium heat, just enough to preserve all its properties and soften the spinach slightly.

To finish, add the flaked almonds, the cheese in small pieces, and a touch of sea salt.

This dish couldn't be simpler, yet it's packed with flavour — a real surprise for guests on a cool day!
