Why are Spaniards consuming less olive oil?
In order to show what the current Mediterranean diet looks like, the Carbonell Barometer of Homemade Food has been used to analyse in detail the position that olive oil occupies in the lives of Spaniards. This survey gives an insight into an average kitchen in Spain today.
According to a report published by Carbonell, olive oil is still an essential ingredient in each person’s daily diet. Even so, it is true that compared to 6 years ago, the use of olive oil has been decreasing significantly.
Since 2012, consumption of this product has suffered a 20% decrease in Spain.
A healthy diet
For this report, a survey of 2000 men and women between 18 and 65 years of age was carried out. The results showed that 95% of the Spanish population thinks that using olive oil in our daily dishes is highly recommended.
Olive oil was selected as the main ingredient that should be featured in our diets, even above serrano ham, vegetable or wine.
Olive oil continues to be a benchmark in Spanish cuisine, according to 86% of the respondents.
Olive oil is an essential product on our daily shopping list. According to 9 out of every 10 Spaniards, this product should always be present in our kitchens.
The ingredients that follow olivie oil are onion, garlic, parsley and wine. Olive oil is much further above on the list.
Because of this, all of this gastronomic knowledge cannot be abandoned, we must teach the younger generation the importance of olive oil and its role in traditional cuisine.
What has caused this?
On the other hand, it can be said that one of the main culprits of the fall of olive oil is the working day.
People normally cook when they have time, but if their timetable doesn’t allow it, they will opt to eat something that requires less time, without having to spend hours preparing a meal.
Because of this, 8 out of 10 Spaniards agree that the tradition of homemade food in Spain could be coming to an end.
For this reason, Mi Oliva Gourmet has decided to launch a Campaign with the aim of reclaiming traditional recipes.
